The Earliest Days

1   1

‘Northwards from the Wolds, the windswept moors of Hambleton and Cleveland remain as they have been throughout pre-historic times, a refuge of broken peoples, a home of lost cultural causes. Bede described the area as ‘vel bestiae commorari vel hommines bestialiter vivere conserverant.’ (‘A land fit only for wild beasts, and men who live like wild beasts.’). Although there are many pre-historic remains on the North Yorkshire moors, it is to this day an area cut off. The Romans built roads around it and the Vikings skirted it also.  When the Romans left and the Saxons and Vikings arrived, they did move into the dales and left their burial mounds and crosses across the moors. Thus the people who today come from the ‘dales on the moors’ of North Yorkshire have remained essentially English for several hundred years and developed very special characteristics.  In many respects they remain to this day a unique English Tribe.

Farndale is not mentioned in Doomsday. But Kirby Moorside is and must have included Farndale. Before the Conquest it was in the hands of Waltef who had a manor and 5 carucates at Fadmoor. In 1086, Count Robert of Mortain held it and it was waste. Later it fell into the hands of Hugh son of Baldric before passing first to Roger de Mowbray and later to William and then Nicholas de Stuteville in 1200. Farndale  then became part of the manor of Kirby Moorside.

The name Farndale, first occurs in history in the Rievaulx Abbey Chartulary in a Charter granted by  Roger de Mowbray to the Abbot and the monks of Rievaulx Abbey in 1154. By it Roger bestowed upon the Monastery, ‘….Midelhovet, that clearing in Farndale where the hermit Edmund used to dwell; and another clearing which is called ‘Duvanesthuat’ and common of pasture in the same valley, to wit, Farndale….’ (Note: Midelhovet is probably ‘Middlehead’ at the head of Farndale near the source of the river Dove, 3.5 miles NW of Farndale East. ‘Duvanesthuat’ could be ‘Dowthwait’ in Farndale, but is more likely to be ‘Duffinstone,’ grid 646987 on the west side of High Farndale).

The name Farndale comes from the Celtic ‘farn, or fearn’ meaning ‘fern’ and the Norwegian ‘dalr’, meaning  ‘dale;’ thus it was the ‘dale where the ferns grew.’ It seems likely that the first people to settle in Farndale were bands of mixed Celtic and Scandinavian stock and that it was they who began to clear areas in which to build and grow crops, but we have no records of them until the 13th Century.

Entries in the Pipe Roll 1209, 1210 and 1211 refer to granting rights in the forest of Farndale to Nicholas de Stuteville by the Abbot of York in the reign of King John and disputes that arose therefrom. Farndale had become a royal forest reserved for the King.

Entries in the Close Roll for 1229, 1253 and 1255 refer to the forest of Farndale as an antique forest and the rights of Hugh de Bigod are defined in it. In 1229 Henry III decreed, ‘the whole of the forest of Galtres and the forest between the Ouse and the Derwent, and the forest of Farndale, are ancient forests.’ But the forest was not much used. There is a possibility that Edward II once visited but no other monarch seems to have ventured there. The Keeper of the Royal Forests reported. ‘the forest of Spaunton between the Dove and the Seven is so confined that deer do not oft repair thither……..’

‘In a certain dale called Farndale there are fourscore and ten natives, not tenants by bovate of land, but by, more and less, whose rents are extended at £38  8s 8d. Each of whom pays at Martinmas two strikes of nuts, four of the aforesaid tenants only being excepted from the rent of nuts. Price of nuts as above. Sum of nuts, two and a half quarters and one strike. Sum in money 43s 9d of whom four score and five shall be harrowing at Lent according to the size of his holding, that is, for each acre of his own land a 1/2d worth of harrowing. Those works are extended at 29s 4d. They ought to be talliated and given pannage as above. The sum of £1 10s 1d. There are there three tenants in waste places called Arkeners and Swenekelis, holding ten acres of land, an paying 10s a year and giving nuts worth 18d. The harrowing is extended at 5d. They are serfs as the aforesaid ones of Farndale. Sum 11s 11d.’

[This would mean that on average each ‘native’ paid 8s 7d  rent and that if the rent per acre was the same as in 1276 (17), then each tenant had 8.5 acres which would mean  about 66 farmers in the dale in 1282].

“The Freedom of the City can be obtained in three different ways. First, by servitude; that is when the applicant has served his full time as an apprentice in his trade before he can be enrolled. Second, is by patrimony; that is when the children of a Freeman claim their freedom as their heritage. Third, is by redemption; that is by the order of the Mayor and Court of Aldermen, which means that the Freedom is given without payment and as a reward for services rendered to the City. Fees have varied from time to time. In the very earliest Chamberlains account books the charge for those who had served their apprenticeship was 3s 4d or 6s 8d but there are cases when only 20d was charged. In cases of poverty no charge was made. Each Freeman had to take the ‘Oath of Fealty.’ No person could carry on a  trade in the City without first obtaining his Freedom. Many  sons took their father’s names. The ‘de’ was dropped during the reign of Henry IV (1399- 1412). We do not know into which category John or his son fell.

  1310   The following information comes from http://www.harlanfamily.org/name.htm

"I am much indebted to Erasmus Harland <erasmus@cliffg.freeserve.co.uk> for the information  in the next few paragraphs. The North Yorkshire Moors lie in an area south of the River Tees, defined by Middlesbrough and Whitby to the north,  Scarborough to the southeast, and Thirsk at the south-west corner. On  the southern edge of the Moors, several valleys in the headwaters of the River Derwent, run south towards the A170, the east-west highway connecting Scarborough and Thirsk. One of these is called Ferndale, and in it are found Gillamoor, Kirbymoorside, Hutton-le-Hole and Harland Moor.

The striking feature of Harland Moor is the rocky nature of its landscape. There are a number of tumuli or  stony cairns either burial mounds of the Bronze Age 1400-1600 BC or later Iron  Age., and the remains of celtic field plots cleared of stones for cultivation by  hand or ard (Celtic wooden plough).  A farm near Gillamoor is known to this day as the 'High Harland', and Harland Moor lies to the east of this, somewhat to the north of Hutton-le-Hole. . Erasmus Harland was given several interesting citations by Raymond Harland Hayes, who at one time lived in Hutton-le-Hole: In 1282, an inquest was held at Kirbymoorside on one Baldwin Wake, and it was recorded:

"There are five tenants on the Harlonde holding certain waste (moorland) plots beneath Gillamoor Bank at the will of the lord, paying 27 shillings per  year and doing service to the lord; also providing a bushel of nuts at Martinmas and a hen at Christmas".

In 1310,  Nicholas de Harland of Farndale was fined because his  cattle had strayed in the forest (North Riding records).  In 1327, . Walter de Harland of Farndale paid tax of 3 shillings , while the Lord of the Manor  paid 5 shillings.  About 1600, there is mention of a Gregory Harland of Farndale. "

William Farnedale of Shyrefhoton’s Will was proved on 13 Mar 1397/8. (If  he was 65 at the time, then he was born about 1332). The Will refers to;

Juliana Farndale,  his wife. They probably married about 1357.

Family;

Richard Farndale, (44) his son whom he makes his

Agnes Farndale, (46) his daughter, say born 1361.

On 7 May 1370, a pardon was granted to William Farndale of the King’s suite at Caleys (Calais) for the death of John de Spaldyngton whereof he is indicted of any consequent outlawry. Administration granted to Thomas and John on 21st December 1435 with rights reserved for similar administration to be granted to Margorie.

(Translated from Latin text of Will held at York. Prob. Reg. 3/441).

Richard Farndale therefore died on or about 20th December 1435.

Abstract From Proceedings;

“To The Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England. Giles Farndale, son of Thomas Farndale (118), carpenter, baptised Whitby.

Military Service;

Giles Farndale served in the Royal Navy. It seems very likely that he was press-ganged at Whitby, probably in 1740 when he would have been 27 years old. The Muster Book for HMS Experiment, a brig with a compliment of 130, shows Giles Farndell as No 101 Able Seaman, impressed on 29 Jun 1740. He is present at every muster until 9 May 1741 when he is marked ‘DD’ (Discharged Dead). No circumstances are recorded which probably means that he died of sickness on 9 May 1741. The ‘Experiment’ was commissioned under Captain Hughes at Deptford between Mar and Jun 1740. On 29 Jun 1740 the ‘Experiment’ was at The Nore, where Giles Farndell (or Farndale; he is listed under both names in different Muster Books), came on complement. From there she sailed for Port Royal, Jamaica where she arrived on 15 Sep 1740. From there until June 1741 the ship was either in Port Royal, at sea, or in Cartagena.

Since Giles was not recorded as ‘from…another ship’ he probably had not served on another.

Muster Rolls;

Under the terms of the Defence Act of 1801 Parish Constables were required to put in returns showing what could be contributed to help in the defence of the Realm in the event of a French attack. Schedule 1 listed men between 15 and 60 who could fight; Schedule 2 listed equipment and schedule 3 listed those who could help in some other way. John Farndale Senior (143) of Kilton is listed as being able to provide; 2 oxen; 11 cows; 11 young cattle and colts; 32 sheep and goats; 9 pigs; 1 riding horse; 4 draft horses; 2 wagons; 2 carts; 26 qtrs of wheat; 48 qtrs of oats; 2 qtrs of barley; 10 qtrs of beans and peas; 19 loads of hay; 25 loads of straw; 20 sacks of potatoes.

His Grandson’s Booklets;

In his booklet ‘A Guide to Saltburn By The Sea’ John Farndale, his Grandson writes, ‘My Grandfather, who was a Kiltonian, employed many men at his alum house, and many a merry tale have I heard him tell of smugglers and their daring adventures and hair breadth escapes.’

In his booklet , The History of Kilton’ John Farndale his Grandson writes, ‘I see in the book recorded and registered in olden times the names of the farmers who once occupied this great farm (Kilton) - R and W Jolly; M Young; R Mitchel; W Wood; J Harland; T Toes; J Readman; J Farndale (116); S Farndale (149); John (143) and William Farndale (183). All these tenants once occupied this great farm now blended into one. I remember what a muster there was at Kilton rent days, twice a year, when dinner was provided for a quarter of a hundred tenants, Brotton, Moorsholm, Stanghow whose rents were paid at Kilton and were indeed belonging to Kilton Court, kept here also: and the old matron proudly provided a rich plum pudding and roast beef; and the steward also a jolly punch bowl, for it was a pleasure for him to take the rents at Kilton, the day before Skelton Rent day. The steward always called ‘Old John Farndale’(116) to the Vice-Chair, he being old and the oldest tenant. Farndale’s was the most numerous family and had lived on the estate for many ages.’  Later he writes, “Once a year at Christmas time they balanced the accounts over a bottle of Hollands gin, and after eulogising each other, the Squire would rise and say, ‘Johnny, when you are gone there will never be such another Johnny Farndale.’ ”
