History of the Farndale Family

Our own part of the Farndale Tree

General Sir Martin Farndale KCB

Links

The purpose of this web site is to make available genealogical and general information about the Farndale Family.

General Sir Martin Farndale KCB died in May 2000. During his lifetime, he carried out extensive research into the Farndale family history. This website has been compiled by his son, Richard Farndale and makes available some of that information for anyone who may be interested.

In doing so, it is hoped that anyone able to provide more information about the Farndale family history, will e-mail Richard Farndale at rcfarndale@hotmail.com (or richard@farndale.info), so that I can try to keep our records current.

The site was first published on 6 November 2001. There is still a lot of work to be done to make available all the research I have and over time the site will slowly develop further.

Since I first published the information onto this site in 2001, I have a limited amount of time to update it. I have had a large number of emails since I started. I am now finding that I do not have time currently to maintain the site. I may therefore shortly go 'off line', but would intend to resurrect this site again in future when I have more time.

This web-site provides the following information:

The Farndale Directory.   My father recorded basic information about all Farndales he researched in a directory. More work needs to be done to this directory to bring it up to date, but the directory provides an extensive database of Farndales and their inter-relationships.

Note that I am in the process of putting together detailed information on individual Farndales. The way to find this information, is to use the directory and you will be guided to these detailed web-pages, from the directory entries.

Some key pages on Farndale history.  This page takes you straight to some of the most interesting documents on the site.

History of the Farndales.   My father began a history of the Farndale family. In time this will be continued. But at this stage, you will be able to find information here about the early Farndales. Once you have used the Farndale Directory to trace back your direct ancestry, the early chapters of this history will give you some idea of our family from medieval times.

Our own part of the Farndale genealogical web.   In time, this part of the site will provide information about our own branch of the Farndale family tree, the descendants of Nicholas Farndale (1512-1572). This lineage also provides a means to connect your own lineage back to 1512, because if you can find yourself connected into this line you will then be able to directly trace yourself back to Nicholas.

General Sir Martin Farndale KCB.   This part of the site provides information about the life of General Sir Martin Farndale KCB.

Links.   This page provides links to other sites.

Another site which you might want to investigate is an Australian site by Robert Mote - his ancestor was Mary Ann Farndale who emigrated to Australia, and he has recorded much of the Farndale history on his web-site - I recommend you go to  http://www.ozigen.com/tree/ and search for Farndale - his site will create a family tree from individual ancestors

Help me to get this website up to date

If you have information, which is not on the web-site, please let me know. You can e-mail me at:

A simple guide to using this web site

The main part of the web site is the "Farndale Directory". Click on the Farndale Directory and try to find yourself. Click on the Volume which shows your birth date. Scroll through the directory until you find yourself, indexed by your birth date. There should be a reference to your parents. Follow that reference number to find your parents (you should be able to do this by clicking on the blue hyperlink, but please be patient if this involves opening a different volume as this will take a few minutes). Then keep tracing back, by following parents, to see how far back you can trace your Farndale ancestry. In many cases you may be able to trace back to about 1500. There is more detailed information on some Farndales and you will be directed to this information from the Directory entries.

The coat of Arms

The coat of arms which you will see throughout this site is my father's. If there are other emblems, mottos or coats of arms in the family, I would be interested to hear about them

Privacy

I do not wish to interfere with anyone's wish for privacy. Consequently, this web site is primarily about Farndales who are no longer alive. As a rule, the only information which I record about living Farndales is names of parents and children and a link to them in the directory. This means that anyone who wishes, can trace their history back, to find more information about our ancestors. In a few very exceptional cases, where I am sure that living Farndales are happy with the information on the site, I have included some information about living Farndales.

I think it is very unlikely that I have included any information on the site which anyone would prefer to keep private. If by chance you find any information on this site which you would prefer not to appear, please just email me.

However, I am still very interested to hear about all Farndales and would be very grateful if you would provide me with what information you can about yourself. If you are happy for information to appear about yourself, please let me know, although I will not publish information about someone else, without their permission.
